Obscured Active Galactic Nuclei¶
A script for fitting Active Galactic Nuclei is provided at xagnfitter.py. This is the method used in Buchner+14, Buchner+15, Simmonds+17.
Features:
Maximum information extraction in the low count regime, by Bayesian inference and background models.
Provides robust uncertainty estimation of all parameters, including the
obscuring column density NH
Photon index Gamma
rest-frame, intrinsic accretion luminosity
etc.
Redshift can be fixed, unknown or come from a probability distribution (photo-z)
Realistic nuclear obscurer model (UXCLUMPY) that
extends to the highest, Compton-thick column densities
is clumpy; does not confuse the line-of-sight inclination and viewing angle parameters
fits objects in the local Universe well
Corrects for galactic absorption
Optional: add an apec \(L<10^{42}\) erg/s contamination component (set WITHAPEC=1)
Can fit multiple observations simultaneously
I strongly recommend using the xagnfitter script instead of hardness ratios.

1) create filenames.txt:

4) verify that the source and background spectral files, and the ARF, RMF files are correctly linked.
You can do this automatically with::
BXA/fixkeywords.py chandra.pi chandra_bkg.pi chandra.rmf chandra.arf
This will fix the fits header keywords.
5) load ciao (source path/to/ciao/bin/ciao.sh). You installed ciao and bxa, right?
6) set the environment variable MODELDIR:
It should point to the directory containing the UXCLUMPY table model files,
namely uxclumpy-cutoff.fits and uxclumpy-cutoff-omni.fits, which you can
download from https://zenodo.org/record/1169181

7) Optional: decide if you want to include a apec component:
If yes, set the environment variable WITHAPEC=1 (default)

This will model contamination from stars in the soft energies at
the source redshift.
The normalisation is limited to not exceed 1e42 erg/s.
8) run:

9) analyse results:
This will create a bunch of output files starting with multiple_out_*.
intrinsic_photonflux.dist.gz contains the posterior samples as rows
(each row is a equally probable solution).
The columns are:
* redshift
* rest-frame intrinsic (unabsorbed) flux in the 2-10keV band
* absorbed flux in the observed band 2-8keV
* source normalisation (log)
* photon index: Prior is 1.95 +- 0.15, so check if it differs from that.
* log(NH): absorbing column density (from 20 to 26)
* f_scat: normalisation of soft, unobscured powerlaw
* apec norm (if did not set WITHAPEC=0)
* apec temperature (if did not set WITHAPEC=0)
* redshift (if not fixed to a single value)

“multiple_out_zspec_” is the prefix used when a .z redshift file is provided and it contains a single number.
The most important files are:
plots/corner.pdf: plot of the parameter constraints and uncertainties and their correlations
info/results.json: summary of all parameters, their uncertainties and estimated lnZ
info/post_summary.csv: summary of all parameters and their uncertainties as CSV
chains/equal_weighted_post.txt: contains posterior samples: each row is a model parameter vector. You can iterate through these, set up the model in pyxspec, and then do something with it (compute fluxes and luminosities, for example).
multiple_out_zspec_intrinsic_photonflux.dist.gz: contains the posterior distribution of redshifts, photon and energy fluxes (see step 9 in the script code)
